Tips for working on your Johnson Outboard's powerhead.
Often, the upper and lower bearing bolts have different lengths. Be *sure* to note and label which is which, or you could really have trouble when you re-assembling your powerhead!. The crankcase bolts are on the edge of the crankcase cover. They secure it to the engine block. Typically are 7/16ths and you will have to take them off before you can get the cover off. Once you have done that, remove the bearing bolts. 2 of them will be in the center behind the reeds. They are (usually) not normal bolts but are allen bolts.

Once the bolts are out, you should hear a soft, hollow sound indicating the cover has come loose from the crankcase. If you do NOT hear this sound, make sure the bolts are all out. DO NOT PRY THE COVER OFF; if you bend or deform the cover in any way it won't go back on right and you will have to get a new cover. After you have the cover off, check the seal that runs around thhe crankcase and make sure it is in good shape.

When you put the cover back on, make *certain* you put the Allen bolts in the center holes and not the edges.
